The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has released the Round 1 seat allotment result for counselling 2026 along with the opening and closing ranks (OR-CR) for programmes offered by participating institutes.The cut-offs show how competitive admission remained at the country’s top Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), with Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) continuing to attract the highest-ranked candidates.The opening rank represents the highest-ranked candidate who secured a seat in a programme, while the closing rank indicates the last rank at which admission was offered in a particular category during that round.At IIT Bombay, CSE emerged as the most sought-after course. The programme closed at All India Rank (AIR) 65 in the Open gender-neutral category. Other popular branches included Electrical Engineering, which closed at AIR 400, and Mechanical Engineering, which closed at AIR 1,852.Economics closed at AIR 2,270, while Civil Engineering admitted candidates up to AIR 4,376. Aerospace Engineering closed at AIR 2,593 and Chemical Engineering at AIR 2,750.IIT Delhi also saw strong competition for its top programmes. CSE closed at AIR 123 in the Open gender-neutral category, making it the institute’s most competitive course in Round 1.Mathematics and Computing followed with a closing rank of AIR 320, while Electrical Engineering closed at AIR 593. Mechanical Engineering admitted candidates up to AIR 2,131 and Civil Engineering closed at AIR 4,798.At IIT Madras, CSE remained the most preferred programme, closing at AIR 149. Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics, one of the newer and increasingly popular programmes, closed at AIR 226.Electrical Engineering at IIT Madras closed at AIR 742, while Mechanical Engineering closed at AIR 2,445. Aerospace Engineering admitted candidates up to AIR 3,125, and Civil Engineering closed at AIR 5,970.The release of the cut-offs came alongside the declaration of the Round 1 seat allotment result. Candidates can now check the institute and programme allotted to them through the official JoSAA portal using their application number and password.Students who have received a seat must complete online reporting between June 13 and June 26. The process includes payment of the seat acceptance fee, uploading documents, verification and selecting one of three options — Freeze, Float or Slide.Candidates choosing “Freeze” accept their allotted seat and do not wish to participate in further rounds. The seat acceptance fee is Rs 30,000 for general category candidates and Rs 15,000 for reserved category candidates.
