After twin series defeats in Ireland and England, Shreyas Iyer’s struggling T20 side looks to regain confidence in 3-match series vs ZimbabweThe last time India faced Zimbabwe in a T20I, it was on Feb 26 in a must-win clash at the 2026 T20 World Cup in Chennai. Reeling from a crushing defeat to South Africa that had left their campaign hanging by a thread, India responded in style, thrashing Zimbabwe by 72 runs before going on to retain the World Cup title.More than five months later, the two sides meet again in vastly different circumstances. India arrive in Harare after successive T20I series defeats in Ireland and England, with new captain Shreyas Iyer still searching for his first victory. The three-match series, beginning on Thursday, offers the world champions a chance to arrest their slide and restore confidence.Having lost six of his first seven matches as T20I captain, Iyer knows results need to change quickly.“We had a rough patch in England, but there were a lot of positives. We understood what we need to build as a team going forward and the kind of awareness and adaptability required at this level,” Iyer said on Wednesday.The spotlight will once again be on teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Harare is the venue where the 15-year-old announced himself on the global stage with a stunning 175 off 80 balls against England in the U-19 World Cup final in Jan. His opening partner Abhishek Sharma also has happy memories here, having scored his maiden T20I hundred at the ground in 2024.Sooryavanshi, however, comes into the series under scrutiny after a difficult debut tour of England, where scores of 14, 13 and 15 highlighted his struggles against high-quality pace, particularly Jofra Archer. Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza urged patience with the youngster.“If a 15-year-old is playing international cricket, criticising him after two or three matches isn’t justified. Vaibhav is a supremely talented cricketer and could be a generational talent if managed well,” Raza said.The series is important for several Indian players seeking to revive their T20 careers. Vice-captain Tilak Varma will be keen to rediscover form after disappointing returns in Ireland and England, while Ishan Kishan and Rinku Singh, both back in the setup, will look to cement their places.India’s revamped pace attack, featuring Prince Yadav, the returning Mayank Yadav, Ashok Sharma and Yash Thakur, will also be under the scanner. Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, meanwhile, will hope to iron out his back-foot no-ball issues while working with bowling coach for this series, former India leftarm spinner, Sunil Joshi.Zimbabwe enter the contest with confidence after recent wins over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, as well as a memorable 23-run upset of Australia at the 2026 T20 World Cup. With the experienced Raza leading the charge and quicks Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava capable of exploiting home conditions, the hosts will fancy their chances of testing an out-of-sorts Indian side.Raza believes India’s ultra-aggressive approach could create opportunities for Zimbabwe to spring another surprise. For India, though, the priority is simple. Stop the slide and start winning again.
