The wife of a Georgia high school teacher who died after being run over by a pickup truck during a late-night prank has appealed to authorities to drop charges against the teenagers involved, saying her husband cared deeply for his students and would not have wanted their lives ruined.Jason Hughes, 40, a math teacher and golf coach at North Hall High School in Gainesville, Georgia, died after being hit by a vehicle while confronting teenagers outside his home late Thursday night. His wife Laura Hughes said the family supports dropping the charges against the students involved in the prank.“This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students,” she said, adding that such punishment would go against her husband’s values.“This would be counter to Jason’s lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children,” she said.Laura, who also teaches math at the same school, said her husband cared deeply about his students and had been looking forward to catching them in the act.According to The New York Times, she said Hughes “was excited and waiting to catch them in the act,” describing the incident as part of a long-running school prank tradition.
Prank gone wrong turns deadly
Authorities said five teenagers had arrived at Hughes’ home around 11.40 pm and covered the property with toilet paper, a prank commonly known as “rolling”.When Hughes stepped outside to investigate, the teens rushed to their vehicles to leave the area.Police said Hughes walked toward the cars but slipped and fell into the rain-slick road as one of the vehicles drove off.An 18-year-old driver, identified as Jayden Ryan Wallace, allegedly struck Hughes with his pickup truck while leaving the scene. The teens immediately stopped and attempted to help the teacher, providing first aid until emergency responders arrived. Hughes was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center but later died from his injuries.
Teen driver faces serious charges
Wallace has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespass and littering.Authorities said he could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.Four other teenagers: Elijah Tate Owens, Aiden Hucks, Ana Katherine Luque and Ariana Cruz, all 18, were also arrested and charged with criminal trespass and littering.Investigators said the prank was part of an annual tradition among students that had escalated in recent years.
Community mourns beloved teacher
The Hall County School District described Hughes as a dedicated educator who had a strong connection with students and colleagues.“Our hearts are broken,” the district said in a statement. “Jason Hughes was a loving husband, a devoted father, a passionate teacher, mentor and coach who was loved and respected by students and colleagues.”Hughes is survived by his wife and their two children.Students and community members gathered at the school over the weekend to honour his memory, remembering him as a supportive teacher who was deeply involved in school activities.
