Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani broke his silence on the much-awaited ‘3 Idiots’ sequel, confirming that the film is indeed in the works. The director shared that the script is still being developed and dismissed any addition to the cast. After Aamir Khan confirmed he is gearing up for a ‘3 Idiots’ sequel, fans have been buzzing with excitement. There were also reports of a ‘fourth idiot’ joining the superstar, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, with Vicky Kaushal’s name circulating as the new entrant. Now, the director has put those speculations to rest.
Rajkumar Hirani reveals where ‘3 Idiots’ sequel script stands
In a conversation with India Today, Hirani shed some light on where exactly the project stands, revealing that while groundwork has been laid, the script is still a work in progress. “Aamir had read a very early draft; the overall idea is there. I don’t know… he must have been doing some media interviews [and spoken about it]. But we are still in the process of writing because we are also very excited about it,” he said.

Hirani also addressed the rumours around a possible new character and the supposed title ‘4 Idiots’, setting the record straight with a laugh. Dismissing both speculations at once, he said, “Mujhe bhi pata laga hai ki iska naam ‘4th Idiots’ hai. Woh maine nahi rakha, woh kahin media ne rakhi hai (I also got to know that it’s being titled 4 Idiots. I have not titled it; the media has only created this). Honestly, there’s no 4th idiot, it’s 3 Idiots only, it’s 20 years later [from where we ended].“
Aamir Khan had earlier hinted at ‘3 Idiots’ sequel
The sequel has been in the news ever since talks continuing the beloved 2009 film first started. Aamir had earlier revealed that Hirani came to him with an idea for the story, and that everyone involved was excited about bringing their favourite characters back to the big screen.Aamir had also given fans a glimpse what to expect, suggesting the film would catch up with Rancho, Farhan and Raju twenty years on. However, he was quick to add the team had no intention rushing into it and would only take the project forward once they were confident the story was worthy bringing the world of ‘3 Idiots’ back to life.
