A social media post by Indians in a private group of Prosper and Celina, two towns in Texas, has enraged American influencers. And this time, some Indians are even supporting them. Texas emerged as the hotbed of Indian hatred in the past few months. City council meetings erupted over the issue of the Indian population; videos of Indians dancing and performing their rituals went viral. Way better than America’s Independence Day,” read the flyer of an advertisement posted in the private Prosper & Celina (Uncensored) Facebook Group.Influencer Kaylee Campbell said she has nothing to say about the event and the flyer but the sentence that it is a lot better than America’s Independence Day was uncalled for. “If you are coming to America and you are going to have your own little festivals or celebrations and then you say it’s better than the one holiday that celebrates the country you are living in, then you probably just need to go back to where you came from,” she said.“And I know that this sounds harsh. But at the end of the day, this is a clear example of the opposite of assimilation, which is the one thing that we are asking these people to do. Am I grouping every single person in the community into this? No. But it’s things like these that are why people get frustrated,” the influencer said, adding that foreigners in the US can’t just flee their own country and then tell Americans that their culture, their holidays are better.
Reaction to the outrage
There was no divided opinion as Indian-Americans too condemned the social media post. “I am an Indian and completely agree that it’s a wrong way to say that’s its way better than USA. I am always grateful that USA has given me the opportunity to live here legally. And have utmost respect to every US Citizen,” one wrote.
